It is estimated that each year 143 million additional surgical procedures need to be done in Sub-Saharan Africa alone. The LLUH GSF will directly address surgery’s indispensable part of health care in underserved areas and will positively affect the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Global Surgery Fellowship (GSF) is a one year training program for American Board of Surgery eligible or certified general surgeons. Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellow for 2018 – ONE SPOT OPEN Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas Date Posted: October 19, 2017Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) is a 1,008-bed tertiary care hospital in the heart of Dallas with a high level of acuity and approximately 39,000 admissions a year. Since 1997, the American College of Surgeons has recognized BUMC as a Level 1 Trauma Center with approximately 3,400 patients evaluated and 2,400 admissions yearly.

Penetrating injury accounts for approximately 17% of our trauma patients and we expect the fellows to operate and improve upon their surgical skills. There are 123 total ICU beds, 57 of which are surgical ICU beds. Currently, our surgical critical care faculty provides care for trauma, acute care surgery, general surgery, solid organ transplant, heart and lung transplant, cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, orthopedic and orthopedic spinal surgery, ENT, oral surgery, OB-GYN, and plastic surgery. The surgeons in the Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery have always been closely involved in general surgery resident education (9 residents a year), as well as research and quality initiatives. Our surgeons also serve as Texas A & M Health Science Center College of Medicine faculty and are heavily involved in medical student education. There are 48 medical students in each class that rotate at our campus starting from their 2nd year onwards. The Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery continues to grow and currently includes 13 faculty physicians, 12 of whom are board certified with Added Qualifications in Surgical Critical Care.

Upon completion of training, the surgical critical care fellows are expected to integrate the acquired knowledge into the clinical situation to demonstrate proficiency in surgical critical care decision-making, specific organ system support, evaluation of new technology and treatment techniques, ICU administration, outcomes assessment, research design, and interaction with patients, families, and health care personnel. The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship will be individualized to each applicant and is focused on developing their future practices whether in academics or a private setting. Vascular Surgery Fellowship Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA Date Posted: October 10, 2017The Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Geisinger Medical Center has an immediate fellowship position available November 1, 2017. The vascular surgeons are primary interventionalists for all procedures including carotid, peripheral, and visceral stenting, thoracic stent grafts, and AAA stent grafts. The fellows also read studies one day per week with instruction from the staff vascular surgeons, this allows the fellows to prepare for the RPVI exam. The remaining time in the first year (approximately 15 percent) is spent in research efforts looking at either clinical projects or the pathophysiology of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

The basic research program is supported with full-time research technicians. The second year comprises the traditional open surgical and advanced endovascular training.

Surgical volume within the Department of Vascular Surgery is in excess of 1,500 cases per year. Attending surgical staff supervises the fellows in clinic a half day per week.

International Surgical Oncology Global Cancer Disparities Fellowship Memorial Sloan Kettering Date Posted: August 3, 2017The Department of Surgery offers a one-year International Surgical Oncology Global Cancer Disparities Fellowship to fully trained surgeons.

The aim of the International Surgical Oncology Global Cancer Disparities Fellowship is to train the fellow to effectively direct multimodality cancer therapy for the cancer patients in both high- and low-income countries. Cancer is a rapidly growing problem in low- and middle-income (LMIC) countries. Outcomes for cancer patients are poor. There is a need for improved research and training to improve these outcomes. The MSK Global Cancer Disparity Initiative was created in 2013. The goal of the initiative is to improve outcomes for patients with cancer in LMIC. It is based on a collaboration between physicians at MSK and Nigeria that began in 2010.

This collaboration has now grown to include the African Research Group for Oncology (ARGO) in Nigeria, which is an MSK cofounded consortium that includes 5 centers in Nigeria and MSK. ARGO has multiple ongoing training endeavors and clinical trials regarding colorectal and breast cancer. In addition, in 2016, a new collaboration was created with the Aga Khan hospitals in Kenya and Tanzania, with a focus on breast and cervical cancer training and research. CLINICAL TRAINING The training throughout the fellowship is comprised of a rotation schedule. Fellows will spend 3 months in breast and colorectal services at MSK, 3 months on clinical research/elective time at MSK, and 6 months at MSK’s collaborating sites in West and East Africa.

While they are on clinical services, fellows are responsible for all preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative patient care. In addition, they are responsible for teaching residents and medical students who are rotating on the service. While in research months at MSK, fellows will attend colorectal and breast cancer clinical conferences while performing research in global cancer disparity topics. Emphasis is placed on understanding and developing multimodality treatment protocols for the range of malignancies which are encountered by surgical oncologists in practice in both high- and low-income countries. Trainees are expected to gain a thorough understanding of cancer biology, cancer disparities, cancer care in resource limited environments, genetics, biostatistics and epidemiology.

This is done through lectures, conferences, grant applications, directed readings and individual research projects. RESEARCH Fellows will become well-versed in the current literature with a specific reading list provided by the global cancer disparity fellowship. This study will focus on topics such as barriers to cancer care, implementation of treatment pathways, and methods for the early detection of cancer. The fellow will also inherit the prospective study that was created by the prior fellow – thus each fellow will generate a prospective study they will develop and initiate and inherit an already established prospective protocol that they will actively manage. The Global Surgery Fellowship (GSF) is a one year training for American Board of Surgery eligible or certified general surgeons. Studies in our laboratory are focused on the design of silk fibroin grafts for hollow organ tissue engineering including tissues of the urinary and digestive tract. Both small (rodent) and large (swine, rabbits, sheep) animal models of tissue repair in the bladder, urethra, small intestine, and esophagus are employed. In addition, our laboratory explores the mechanisms of constructive remodeling of tissue engineered constructs by delineating how host tissue microenvironments interact, populate, and integrate into scaffold environments in vivo. Our group synergizes the expertise of clinicians, bioengineers, and molecular biologists in a dynamic research environment to produce clinically-viable biomaterials. Experience with small/large animal surgery and husbandry is required. Completion of a general surgery, urology or comparable residency program is required.

Pathology, biomaterials, and/or immunological expertise is recommended. The candidate should be able to work independently as well as with a team of investigators.

The University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) in Albuquerque is the only ACS verified Level 1 Trauma Center in the state and has a busy surgical critical care practice. The fellowship is overseen by 6 Trauma/Critical Care faculty and the fellows will interact with intensivists from other specialities. Fellows will spend 6 months in the Trauma Surgical ICU, 3 months in the CardioVascular ICU and 2 months the Neurosciences ICU all at UNMH.

The UNMH serves as the major referral for tertiary and quaternary care in New Mexico as well as parts of the surrounding states, serving a population of 1.2 million people. A Surgical Critical Care fellow will manage patients that span the depth and breadth of surgical critical care issues in a high volume practice. UNM HSC is one of only 29 institutions nationally that has both an NIH (NCI) designated Cancer Center (Comprehensive Cancer Center) and a CTSC. Advanced GI Surgery Fellow The University of Missouri Date Posted: January 12, 2017The Advanced GI Surgery Fellowship at the University of Missouri is a clinical fellowship with ample opportunities for clinical and basic science research. The focus of the fellowship is in the diagnosis and surgical care of complex gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, bariatric, thoracic, and advanced general surgical procedures.

The fellow is expected to assume the role of the operative surgeon with the attending being the assistant. The faculty is comprised of internationally recognized academic surgeons with expertise in open, laparoscopic, robotic, and endoscopic surgical techniques. The fellow is appointed as an Instructor within the Department of Surgery and receives clinical privileges. Clinical responsibilities include all aspects of care for advanced GI and thoracic surgical patients, from the initial clinic visit to post-operative care.

Our multidisciplinary clinics and conferences are an integral part of the management of these patients. These conferences allow for seamless interactions between the departments and create a collaborative spirit which is beneficial for the patients and physicians. The fellow will assume an active role in the clinics and conferences.

Research Fellowship University of Buffalo Date Posted: January 3, 2017The Department of Surgery at the University of Buffalo invites applications for a 1 or 2 year mentored research training program designed for academically-oriented MDs interested in clinical outcomes and health services research in Transplantation. This opportunity focuses on combining outcomes research experience and rigorous graduate level didactic training to produce well-trained clinical outcomes and health services researchers with an exposure to 4 core areas central to health services and outcomes research (registry dataset analysis, patient-centered outcomes, healthcare policy, and clinical research development). Advanced Colorectal Surgery Fellowship Florida Hospital Tampa Date Posted: January 3, 2017The Advanced Colorectal Surgery Fellowship at Florida Hospital Tampa is a one year fellowship. The fellowship position will begin on August 1st of each academic year, and it is designed for surgeons who want to increase their knowledge and technical skills in advanced colon and rectal procedures. The program includes clinical, academic, and research components. The goals of this one year fellowship are to train fellows in advanced surgical procedures and to prepare them for a career in Surgery.

The Program Director for the fellowship is Dr. Allen Chudzinski, and the Co-Director is Dr. Haane Massarotti.

This Advanced Fellowship provides the fellows a full range of exposure to advanced laparoscopic and robotic procedures for colorectal disorders, as well as endoscopic procedures. The Program Director, Allen Chudzinski, FACS, FASCRS, is board certified in both General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery. Prior to joining Florida Hospital Tampa, Dr. Chudzinski held an academic appointment at Georgetown University.

Haane Massarotti recently completed 2 years of Advanced Colorectal Surgery fellowship training at Cleveland Clinic in Florida. Chudzinski and Dr. Massarotti are trained and well experienced in the most advanced minimally invasive techniques available today for the treatment of colon and rectal disorders. The Colorectal Surgery practice offers an extensive experience in treating colorectal disorders, and provides training in a broad range of surgical techniques including endo-luminal, laparoscopic, robotic and open procedures. The clinical activity of the fellowship is undertaken at Florida Hospital Tampa (FHT), a beautiful 500 bed hospital locate in North Tampa. Florida Hospital Tampa is the tertiary hospital for the West Florida Region, which is comprised of six local hospitals.

The mission of Florida Hospital is to offer patients access to the most advanced technology and treatment options available today. Clinical Responsibilities: The fellow is fully engaged in both clinical and research activities throughout the year. Clinical activities include inpatient care and outpatient care. The outpatient clinical experience includes new, established, and postoperative patients, and clinics are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week. In addition to outpatient clinic visits, the fellow will assist with flexible sigmoidoscpopies and banding procedures done in the outpatient setting. The fellow will focus at least 2.5 days each week on operative and inpatient care.

The operative experience includes endo-luminal, laparoscopic, robotic and open procedures for the treatment of colon and rectal disorders. Florida Hospital Tampa is home to three robots, a dual console and simulator, as well as state of the art integrated operating rooms; therefore, the fellow will gain extensive knowledge in robotic operations for colon and rectal disorders. Trauma Research Fellowship Methodist Dallas Medical Center Date Posted: January 2, 2017The Trauma Research Fellowship allows candidates to work intimately with our trauma surgeons and research scientists at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. The goal of this program is to conduct Trauma and Acute Care research in collaboration with our research team.

This position is an unpaid position. Fellows are expected to be an integral part of the Trauma Department and Trauma Research Group. Research fellows will publish manuscripts under the guidance of our experienced surgical and research faculty. As the only Level I Trauma Center serving South Dallas, our unique patient population forms the basis for numerous and diverse investigations. The Fellow will participate in multiple clinical research projects related to retrospective, prospective, and randomized controlled studies. Additionally, Fellows will be given an opportunity to publish and present their work at national and international meetings.

The Division targets several large meetings each year, including the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, American Surgical Association, Western Trauma Association and the American College of Surgeons. Global Surgery Fellolwship Creighton University Date Posted: January 2, 2017The fellow will rotate on Dentistry, Urology, Orthopedics, Trauma, Anesthesiology, Obstetrics and Gynecology here in Omaha and for a week in the Dominican Republic with a hernia mission. The fellow will learn post-operative and pre-operative care in clinic settings and perform operations. A target number of appropriate operations for each specialty have been assigned.

A written examination for each rotation must be passed and a letter of recommendation from the respective program chairman is required before proceeding to the next rotation. During the second year the surgeon will perform at a first level hospital in a developing country 200 – 400 major operations and develop and put in place 2 or more systems for improved health care.

The fellow will take general surgical call periodically and may do locum tenens. A satellite phone will be provided for consultation purposes and a standard salary and benefits will be provided. Transportation costs for two round trips to and from the developing country site during the second year are included. The second year site will be safe but austere.
