Water purifiers won't help. Softeners add sodium or potassium to the water (depending on the type 'salt' you use).
Run the softener to the hot water heater ONLY; increase the setting appropriately. If you run the whole house water system through the softener, then you ingest more sodium, and everything your system water touches (outside landscaping, cars during washing/rinsing, etc) get salted also. Not a smart thing to do. [BTW, in the Midwest, many older homes have 'hard water taps' at the kitchen sink to allow unsoftened water to be drawn; HINT HINT.]. Hi timothyd44- This is Sue at GE Appliances. It is not a 'dry tank. It is normal to have approximately 2 to 5 inches of water standing in the salt storage tank.
If there is excessive or a high level of water in the brine tank (salt tank), check the following: •A restriction in the drain hose will prevent the salt water from draining. Found tubular out. Internal components inside the tank move around during shipping and handling. Found tubular out of alignment either from Home Depot's handling or mine, I had to haul laying down, to rectify I removed packaging and tipped softener in direction it needed to move and it went right into place. Installed and programed easily.
Definitely buy the rather expensive shark bite connector tubes which gives flexibility of install. Shark bite fittings sure have solved the problem of getting all the water out of line in order to solder. Tenant is very pleased with easy of use and quality of water, the babies skin has improved in only 2 weeks. I will be purchasing another one for my house to replace an old inefficient one.

Now that it was showing signs of trouble, mom called the Culligan Man, and the man wanted to get rich fast. He suggested replacement of the system for a small price of $1500.
I've seen this GE unit on HomeDepot.com a while ago. The price was right and the reviews were good. I had it shipped to my parents' home.
I then installed it myself and they seem pretty happy. The water is soft again and once I put in 2 bags of salt to start, the unit told me I'd need to add salt again in 99 days. The Culligan unit seemed to take 2 bags per month. Have only had the unit running for a week, but so far so good. Where Is The Serial Number On A Suzuki Quadrunner 300. This one has only recharged twice since it was installed 5 weeks ago, so it's using LOTS less salt. I'm satisfied with the quality of the water, and noticed faucets and sinks looking cleaner after only a few days; using LOTS less soap and laundry detergent too. I was worried that the noise of regeneration would wake me up at night, since it's on the other side of my bedroom wall, but I haven't heard any noise at all--my older unit was terribly loud. Very happy & glad I looked at the reviews here -- saved me from buying a more expensive unit. Rated 5 out of 5 by Marketmic from I did my research before buying this bargain priced water softener.
It was simple to install (I'm. I did my research before buying this bargain priced water softener. It was simple to install (I'm not a plumber), I used the recommended parts from the HD guy (Shark Bite fittings are AWESOME). This was a new install in a newer home that was prepped for the softener.
I had to cut the pipes and added a shut off valve (shark bite too). Total clock time about 45 minutes including cleaning/prepping the existing pipes. I use this system again. 10 GPM Whole House NaturSoft Salt-Free Water Softener System The NS3 Pelican NaturSoft Salt Free Water Softener The NS3 Pelican NaturSoft Salt Free Water Softener System is the premium maintenance-free no-salt water softener and conditioner certified for 99.6% scale prevention and offers an industry-leading limited lifetime warranty.
